We’ve been lead to believe that motivation is something we have to give employees. That it’s something outside of most of us.
We’ve been lead to believe that there are two methods of motivation – rewards and punishment.
In fact, there are two types of motivation – intrinsic and extrinsic. Intrinsic is of course the best, because we’re more successful doing the things we want to do. Motivation that comes from within us is just a lot more fun and it’s easier.
In the video on this page, Daniel Pink shares the science behind motivation. It turns out that in business, we’ve basically been doing it all wrong. Carrots and sticks don’t work – at least not for long. And it turns out that some carrots can actually work against a manager…or at least what he or she is trying to accomplish with the carrot.
